The Cure for the Blahs

Some days simply feel gray.

Not dark enough to call it depression… but certainly not bright enough to call it joy. It’s that dull, listless feeling that quietly whispers, “Nothing special will happen today.”

I like to call those moments the blahs.

March can be a prime month for the blahs. The sky is cloudy, winter has overstayed its welcome, and spring still feels like a distant promise. But the truth is, the blahs don’t just visit in March—they can creep into any season of life.

And yet, God offers us a beautiful antidote.

One of my favorite verses in the entire Bible is:

Psalm 118:24
"This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."

Notice something important about that verse.

It doesn’t say “This is the day the Lord has made—so feel joyful.”

It says “we will rejoice.”

Rejoicing is a choice.

The Gift of 1,440 Minutes

Every night at the stroke of midnight, heaven places an extraordinary gift into your hands: 1,440 brand-new minutes.

It doesn’t matter your age, income, education, or life circumstances. Every single one of us receives the exact same daily treasure.

1,440 minutes.

You can spend those minutes worrying or worshiping.
Complaining or praising.
Criticizing or blessing.

Even when life includes responsibilities we didn’t choose—work schedules, medical appointments, caring for loved ones—we still have the power to choose how we live inside those minutes.

The blahs convince us that our days are dull, meaningless, or repetitive.

But Scripture reminds us that every day is handcrafted by God Himself.

When Our Souls Begin to Drift

Sometimes the blahs appear because our souls have slowly drifted away from the very thing that brings us life.

Years ago, a nurse friend shared something fascinating with me about infants who suffer from a condition called failure to thrive. These babies may receive enough food, but without nurturing connection—without being held, comforted, and bonded—they simply stop growing.

Their bodies lose the will to thrive.

I couldn’t help but think about how easily this happens to us spiritually.

We can attend church, read a verse occasionally, and still feel strangely empty inside. Our hearts grow weary, and joy feels distant.

Why?

Because our souls were designed for close connection with the Father.

Not occasional contact.

Daily presence.

The Power of Worship

The cure for the blahs is not a vacation, a shopping trip, or even a perfectly organized schedule.

The cure is worship.

When we worship, something supernatural happens. Praise changes the atmosphere of our hearts. Gratitude realigns our perspective. Worship lifts our eyes away from ourselves and back toward the goodness of God.

The psalmist didn’t say, “This is the day the Lord has made—I hope it turns out well.”

He said:

"We will rejoice."

That’s an act of the will.

Some mornings praise rises naturally from our hearts. Other days we must gently command our souls:

“Today I will worship.”

“Today I will give thanks.”

“Today I will rejoice.”

And when we do, the gray clouds of the blahs begin to lift.

A Simple Practice

My sweet mother once made a list of things she loved in life. It was filled with simple joys—lattes, laughter, loyal friends, blue skies, and old hymns.

Her list reminded me of something powerful:

Joy often grows when we pay attention to the goodness already surrounding us.

So today, why not make your own list?

Write down ten things you love about the life God has given you. The small blessings. The quiet miracles. The everyday gifts.

You may discover that joy has been waiting patiently for your attention all along.

Reflection Questions

  • What small blessings have you overlooked lately?

  • How can you intentionally choose rejoicing today?

  • What helps you reconnect with God’s presence when your heart feels dull or weary?

A Prayer

Jesus, Thank You for the gift of today. Forgive me for the moments when I allow discouragement or apathy to cloud my heart. Teach me to rejoice in the life You have given me. Help me to spend the minutes of this day in worship, gratitude, and love. Fill my heart with Your presence so that I might live fully alive for You. Amen.

And if you’d like a daily reminder to live with purpose and joy, my devotional Today Is a Verb will help you embrace each day with faith, enthusiasm, and worship.

Because the truth is this:

Today isn’t just another day on the calendar.

It’s a gift from God.

And you get to decide how you will spend it.
