The Power of Praying Scripture: 8 Bible Verses to Pray Over Loved Ones

There are moments in life when we simply run out of words to pray.

Maybe someone you love is far from God. Maybe your child is making choices that frighten you. Maybe a friend is walking through heartbreak, grief, or circumstances you cannot fix. You want to pray, but sometimes all you can manage is, “Lord, please help.”

In those moments, one of the most powerful things we can do is open the Bible and pray the Word of God.

Praying Scripture gives us something solid to stand on when our emotions are overwhelming. Rather than allowing fear to write our prayers, we can allow God’s Word to shape them. We can bring our concerns to Him while reminding our own hearts of who He is, what He has promised, and how deeply He cares for the people we love.

Here are eight Scriptures you can begin praying today.

1. Pray for Joy to Return

“And the ransomed of the LORD will return and come with joyful shouting to Zion, with everlasting joy upon their heads. They will find gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.”
— Isaiah 35:10

There are seasons when sorrow seems to have taken up permanent residence in someone’s life. But Scripture reminds us that sorrow does not get the final word.

Pray that God would restore joy. Pray for the day when heaviness gives way to gladness and the person you love experiences the refreshing presence of God again.

Prayer: Lord, replace sorrow with joy. Restore what has been lost and lead the person I love back into the gladness found in Your presence.

2. Pray for a Heart That Knows God

Jeremiah records this beautiful promise:

“I will give them a heart to know Me, for I am the LORD; and they will be My people, and I will be their God, for they will return to Me with their whole heart.”
— Jeremiah 24:7

More than changed circumstances, we should desire changed hearts.

We can pray that God would awaken a hunger for Him that nothing else can satisfy. Pray not merely for better behavior, but for a heart that genuinely knows, loves, and follows God.

Prayer: Father, give them a heart to know You. Draw them toward You and lead them to return to You wholeheartedly.

3. Pray With Hope When You Have Cried Enough Tears

Sometimes prayer is accompanied by tears.

Jeremiah 31:16 says:

“Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears; for your work will be rewarded,” declares the LORD, “and they will return from the land of the enemy.”

God sees every tear you have cried for the people you love.

Your prayers are not wasted simply because you cannot yet see the answer. Keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep believing that God is working in places you cannot see.

4. Pray Knowing That Jesus Holds Them Securely

Jesus said:

“I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.”
— John 10:28

Fear often tells us that everything depends upon us.

But this verse reminds us whose hands are ultimately strong enough to hold a life.

When you are frightened for someone you love, picture the hands of Jesus. They are stronger than your fear, stronger than temptation, and stronger than anything you cannot control.

Prayer: Jesus, hold them securely. Protect their heart and remind me that Your hands are stronger than mine.

5. Pray According to the Heart of the Father

Matthew 18:14 tells us:

“So it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones perish.”

What comfort there is in remembering that God cares even more deeply for the people we love than we do.

When you pray for a child, grandchild, friend, or loved one, you are not trying to convince an indifferent God to care. You are bringing that person before a Father whose heart is already filled with compassion toward them.

6. Pray With Confidence That God Hears You

First John tells us:

“This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
— 1 John 5:14

Prayer is not shouting into an empty room.

God hears you.

You may not always understand His timing or recognize His answer immediately, but you can pray with confidence that every prayer offered according to His will is heard.

7. Keep Asking, Seeking, and Knocking

Jesus encourages us:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
— Matthew 7:7

There are prayers we whisper once, and there are prayers we carry for years.

Do not confuse waiting with silence.

Keep asking. Keep seeking. Keep knocking.

Persistent prayer is not evidence that God has forgotten you. It is an invitation to remain close to Him while you wait.

8. Pray From the Place of Your Own Broken Heart

Sometimes the person you are praying for is not the only one hurting.

You are hurting too.

Psalm 34 gives this promise:

“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18

God does not ask you to pretend that everything is fine.

Bring Him your grief. Bring Him your worry. Bring Him every unanswered question.

The same God you are asking to reach your loved one is also drawing near to you in your brokenness.

Let Scripture Shape Your Prayers

My friend, you do not have to manufacture perfect prayers.

When you do not know what to say, open your Bible.

Read a promise slowly. Speak the name of the person you love. Turn the verse into a prayer and give that person back to God once again.

There will be days when faith feels strong and days when all you have left is a whispered prayer.

Both are heard.

Keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep placing the people you love into the hands of the One who loves them even more than you do.

God is listening.

And His Word gives us something strong enough to stand on while we wait.
